The Heights is one of Houston’s oldest and most interesting neighborhoods. With history going back well over 100 years, The Heights began as an area where people chose to build homes to get away from “the big city” of Houston. In the early 1900’s The Heights became a planned development and, as so often it happens with the passage of time, people found other, newer neighborhoods more to their liking. Many properties fell into decay and businesses in The Heights struggled. Over the past 15 years or so, The Heights has seen a powerful resurgence in popularity, largely because of its close proximity to Downtown. Many of the older homes that were still structurally sound were renovated and others razed with new homes built in styles compatible with the older ones.
Today, The Heights is a beautiful example of urban renewal and both the real estate market and business are thriving!
Located just northwest of Downtown, approximate boundaries of The Heights are I-10 frontage road on the south to 20th Street on the north, and Ashland St. to I-45 from west to east. The renewal and building, however, is expanding outside those boundaries.
Although rare, there are rentals in The Heights for under $1,000/mo. but most range from $1,200-$3,500/mo. Townhouses and condos in The Heights are priced from $300,000 to $700,000, with single family homes in the same price range.
