Northwest Houston offers two of the most desirable neighborhoods in the city right now: Oak Forest and Garden Oaks. Oak Forest began in 1947 in what was then unincorporated Harris County. It was annexed by the City of Houston in 1949, with a building “boom” in the 1950’s. Some of those original houses still stand, although many have been remodeled to suit modern taste and still others have been demolished in favor of new homes on the very valuable lots. Oak Forest Elementary School, one of the area’s first, is still in operation. T. C. Jester Park is a great place for leisure fun almost year round. Oak Forest is conveniently located just north of I-610 and east of US 290, and many local roads run through the area. Actor Patrick Swayze, a Houston native, grew up in Forest Oaks.
Garden Oaks, a neighborhood just north of The Heights, was established in 1937. Homes were originally built for returning World War II veterans are combined with other mid-century styles on over-sized lots. Garden Oaks today enjoys soaring home values due to its highly desirable location and the booming Houston economy. Homes in the area have been remodeled and enlarged, while others have been razed and the lots reused.
The natural beauty of the tall trees continues to make Garden Oaks a desirable place to live.
Northwest Houston is also home to Northwest Mall, a major retail outlet. Aside from other fine retailers, Northwest Mall is now home to Thompson’s Antiques, one the Houston’s largest and finest venue for antique shopping. There are other neighborhoods in Northwest Houston. There are homes available in almost any style, size, and price range, although prices have gone up significantly in the last few years. There are also some townhouses and condominiums available.
